Store return policies at a glance
These are standard policies for major U.S. retailers as of early 2026. Always check your receipt for exceptions. Membership tiers, opened electronics, and clearance items may have different rules.
Holiday extension: For purchases made November 1 through December 31, many retailers extend the return window to January 31 of the following year. The tracker applies this automatically when you check the holiday box.
Restocking fees: Some stores charge up to 15% for opened electronics, special-order items, or items returned without original packaging. This tracker does not calculate fees — it only tracks deadlines.
How to stay on top of return deadlines
Check the receipt first
Many stores print the return deadline right on the receipt. For online orders, the confirmation email usually states the return window. Always start there before relying on general policy tables. Some retailers shorten windows for clearance, seasonal, or final-sale items.
Don't assume 90 days
A common mistake is thinking every store gives 90 days. Target gives 90 days for most items but only 30 for electronics. Best Buy gives 15 days for most purchases unless you are a Plus or Total member. Walmart gives 90 days for most things but 30 for electronics and 14 for phones.
Keep packaging until the window closes
Many retailers require original packaging for electronics returns. If you toss the box on day one, you may not be able to return the item even within the deadline window. Store boxes in a closet or garage until the return period ends.
Watch for membership perks
Amazon Prime members sometimes get extended return windows on select items. Best Buy Plus and Total members get 60 days instead of 15. If you pay for a store membership, check whether it includes longer return periods and note that in the tracker.
Holiday policies vary
While most major retailers extend holiday returns to January 31, some go further. Costco has a famously generous return policy that does not change for holidays. Small businesses and marketplace sellers set their own rules. When in doubt, ask before buying.
Set a weekly reminder
Bookmark this page and check it every Sunday. Sort by days left to see which items need attention first. Print the schedule and stick it on the fridge if you prefer paper. The share link lets you send the list to a partner or family member who helps with returns.
Things to double-check
- Store policies change. The presets here are accurate as of early 2026 but may not reflect recent updates.
- Membership tiers (Prime, Target Circle Card, Best Buy Plus) can change return windows. The tracker uses standard non-member policies unless you adjust the deadline manually.
- Marketplace purchases on Amazon, Walmart.com, or eBay follow the individual seller's policy, not the platform's default.
- Opened software, digital downloads, and gift cards are often non-returnable regardless of the window.
- This tracker does not account for restocking fees, return shipping costs, or in-store-only return requirements.
